Timesplitting Hairs…
I have always loved shoot ‘em ups. Any game with big guns and big explosions holds an instant attraction for me; it’s just the way things are!! Spider Solitaire is not my thing; gimme Goldeneye instead any day!!! Of course, shoot ‘em ups have changed in a very big way over the years (and I’m old enough to remember zapping away at endless waves of rocks on ‘Asteroids’so I know what I’m talking about!). The quality of the graphics in video games has come on in leaps and bounds; whilst the sounds used in modern shooters will convince you that you’re smack-bang (literally) in the middle of a warzone!!!
But, as any serious gamer will tell you, it is not all to do with graphics or audio… the most important element of any shoot ‘em up is its playability! Some games can actually look pretty creaky (especially by today’s standards) yet they are still hugely addictive. And that is why I so often go back to a handful of old favourites when I feel like causing some serious mayhem.
In my collection, the most played-on titles are probably; ‘Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction’and the three games in the ‘Timesplitters’series. They may be a little ‘old hat’for most people, but I simply cannot get enough of them! For me, the gameplay in these is quite simply spot-on.
I’m pretty sure that no matter how good the games of the future are, I shan’t be getting rid of any of these stalwart titles in a hurry!
